Why you keep starting over on Monday (and how to stop)

The all-or-nothing cycle isn't a willpower problem. Here's what's really going on, and three small changes that break it.

Monday: fresh start, perfect plan. Wednesday: a long day, a biscuit, then the whole packet. Thursday: “I’ve ruined it, I’ll start again next week.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not lacking willpower. You’re stuck in a cycle that rigid plans almost guarantee.

The problem with perfect plans

Strict rules make any slip feel like failure. And when you feel you’ve failed, it’s natural to give up until the next clean start. The plan was never designed for real life, so real life breaks it.

Three changes that help

1. Replace rules with ranges

Instead of “no sugar”, try “something sweet I really enjoy, most days”. Ranges leave room for birthdays, tired evenings and holidays without anything to “ruin”.

2. Plan your next meal, not your next week

After an off day, the only question that matters is: what’s a good next meal? Not a detox, not a fresh Monday. Just the next plate.

3. Add before you take away

Start with what you can add: a portion of vegetables at lunch, a glass of water before coffee, protein at breakfast. Adding feels generous. Restricting feels like punishment.

Consistency beats perfection. A good-enough habit you keep for a year will change more than a perfect one you keep for a week.
